The Effect of Irradiated Ergosterol on Thyroparathyroidectomized

چکیده
In a previous publication (1) it was shown that the feeding of cod liver oil to dogs for a period of 2 weeks before the removal of the thyroid and parathyroid glands greatly influenced the results of such an operation. The calcium of the blood serum fell as usual after parathyroidectomy, but the animals either did not develop tetany or the attacks were slight. The length of life of the treated dogs was greatly increased over that of the controls. Feeding of the oil after the operation was without apparent effect. More recently papers have been published by Brougher (2) and by Wade (3) in which they have reported somewhat similar results. In not all cases was tetany prevented, but it was greatly delayed and the attacks were rather mild. Greenwald and Gross (4) on the other hand were unable to substantiate these findings. Since preoperative treatment with cod liver oil appeared to exert a definite influence on the results following thyroparathyroidectomy, it was thought advisable to study the effect of activated ergosterol. Several papers have already appeared in which are reported the results of treatment with irradiated ergosterol after the removal of the parathyroids. Urechia and Popoviciu (5) administered it to six dogs subcutaneously and by mouth. Four of the dogs died in tetany. The other two recovered from the tetany and lived for about 2 months, during which time there was a slight rise in the concentration of serum calcium. Brougher (6) claims that the giving of activated ergosterol in conjunction

On the Actions of Crystalline Vitamin D(2) (calciferol) in Chronic Parathyroid Tetany.
Vitamin D has proved effective in raising the serum calcium and alleviating the symptoms of chronic parathyroprivic tetany in experimental animals (1, 2) and man (3, 4, 5). A number of factors including dosage (6, 7), and calciumphosphorus content of the diet (8), have been found to influence its effect, and where these have not been taken into consideration vitamin D has failed (9, 10). The po...

Studies on the Effects of Calciferol in the Thy- Roparathyroidectomized-nephrec-
Various views are held regarding the manner in which massive doses of irradiated ergosterol, or other antirachitic preparations, produce an elevation in the blood calcium. The most plausible among these views appear to be the following: (1) The antirachitic agent stimulates the parathyroids Do great activity. (2) The antirachitic vitamin influences the net absorption1 of calcium from the intest...

Introduction: Greatly increased use of antifungal therapies has resulted in the development of multidrug resistant. The phenolic compound carvacrol have been reported to have anti-Candida activity. This work is an attempt to examine effect of carvacrol on ergosterol synthesis against multidrug resistant Candida albicans. Methods: This cross-sectional study has been conducted on 30 immune-compr...

BROWN AND SHOHL [1930] and Watchorn [1930] have shown that large doses of irradiated ergosterol lead to a decreased retention of calcium in rats, in spite of the calcification of certain tissues which takes place at the same time. It has been noted also by Brown and Shohl [1930], Duguid, Duggan and Gough [1930] and by Harris [1930] that the severity of the symptoms of hypervitaminosis D corresp...
